Helen Jean Whan passed away peacefully in her sleep, at her new home in Grass Valley, California. She was 97 years old and surrounded by her loving family. She is now in the loving arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
A Recitation of the Rosary will be held at Saint Canice Catholic Church in Nevada City, California, on Tuesday, July 11, at 5:30 PM with the Funeral Mass on Wednesday, July 12, at 10:30 AM, with a reception to follow at the church hall.
Helen was born July 2, 1925 in Youngstown, Ohio, to Howard and Olive Bedell.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Frederick Eugene Whan. She was the mother of seven children: Kenneth Whan of Reno, NV, Cheryl Acevedo of Loyalton, CA, Dennis Whan of San Diego, CA, Maggie Whan AKA Deborah Whan of Grass Valley, CA, Fred Whan of San Diego, CA, Pete Whan of Pasadena, CA, and Kimberly Mello of Nevada City, CA; and 13 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was a long time resident of Pasadena, California, where she raised her seven children and worked in the hospitality industry at Monty’s Steakhouse for 44 years.
Helen was the true example of the Little Old Lady from Pasadena, a song by The Beach Boys, were everyone knew her name. She was an avid Dodger fan; never missing a game on TV and attending as many as she could. Now she’s cheering on her favorite team, the Los Angeles Dodgers, from Heaven.
