Mary Ann Newnan

Born – 12/19/1948 – Van Nuys, CA. Passed away on 11/26/2023 in Lincoln, CA at 74 years of age.

Moved to Grass Valley in 1960 where she became active in the Girl Scouts of America, including a most memorable trip to Washington DC in a bus with 32 fellow scouts for several weeks. Mary Ann attended Nevada Union HS, where she asked her future husband and the love of her life, Doug Newnan, to the Sadie Hawkins dance in 1966. The couple was married soon thereafter in November of 1967. The couple recently celebrated 56 years of marriage.

Mary Ann lit up the room with her smile and enjoyed talking to family, friends and even complete strangers for hours. She expressed a genuine interest in the lives of others. She owned restaurants in Cisco Grove & Grass Valley for a 10 year span, and then worked for the County of Nevada for 27 years. She enjoyed attending her sons’ sporting events for the past four decades. She was a selfless, kind-hearted individual who was often found in the 80’s operating the Grass Valley Little League snack shack, and more recently volunteering as a hospice respite worker in Nevada County. She loved traveling with her husband to places like Spring Training in AZ, she visited National Parks in 47 of our states, and somehow navigated her way to every casino along the couple’s cross-country journeys. Mary Ann frequently escaped to her happy place, the scenic and peaceful South Lake Tahoe.

She is survived by her husband Doug Newnan; son Tony Newnan and wife, Theresa and granddaughter, Bella; son Russ Newnan and wife, Kelli; sister Bonnie (Stanley) Willis and husband, Lee; and brother Tom Stanley and wife, Mynelle. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
