June 27,1935 to December 14, 2023

Doug peacefully passed away at Sierra Nevada Memorial Hospital on December 14th, he was 88 years old.

Born 1935 in Montreal Canada and moved to Los Angeles CA by train in 1948 at age 13 leaving the freezing winters behind. His parents immigrated from Scotland, they were a close-knit musical family. He loved Montreal and was able to visit in 2016 going to his old home and actually found the summer house his family built, as well as attending a Montreal Canadians hockey game. Doug was a goalie and skated as a boy with some of the greats like Maurice Richard “Rocket”. As soon as he arrived in Southern CA he took on 3 paper routes which included riding his bike down Sunset Boulevard to the ocean. He retired at age 72 selling his Pioneer Saw Works family sharpening business which he coveted. He and his high school sweetheart Lurelle married in 1954 in Glendale then moved to Auburn and settled on Cedar Ridge in 1960 where he started his own printing shop and raised their family.

During his life he worked multiple trades; he worked at Lausman Lumber, spent time as a Realtor, Manager for the Nevada County Fairgrounds from 1979 to 1984 where he made positive changes and was instrumental in building the Senior Center.

He and Lurelle opened Hasting Hobbies and Bikes creating a business for the girls and nephew Greg Ludlum to work in, and he even had a short stent on the Grand Jury.

Doug was community involved and worked to start a BMX track and race at the Fairgrounds. He was happiest doing woodworking projects for family, and giving puppies treats – he loved them big or small. Doug was a first class square dance caller for the Gold Dancers from the late 60’s to the early 1980’s and started a dance group for teens, the Promenading Pups, getting his girls involved. He had a beautiful voice, was hard working, had many talents, always willing to lend a helping hand, a man of his word and all around great guy that everyone enjoyed.

Doug is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, 4 daughters (Linda Murphy, Vicki Downs, Teri Reuter and Brenda Haynes) 4 son in laws, 11 grandchildren and 18 great grandkids, nieces and nephews all that he loved immensely.

Celebrating his life at Hooper & Weaver on Friday December 29th at 11am.
