Wayne Morris Cartwright passed away on March 3, 2024. He was 81.
Wayne was born February 6, 1943 in San Francisco, CA. Not long after his birth the Cartwright family returned to Grass Valley, CA where he was raised. While he attended school he was active in extra curricular sports such as softball, baseball, basketball and track. Because of Wayne’s very strong work ethic, he began working at an early age. At 12 years old, he began delivering The Union Newspaper daily including walking house-to-house to collect the monthly newspaper dues from subscribers long before current technology! Then at age 14 he began work in the Bierwagon Orchards thinning apples and picking pears. After graduating from Nevada Union High School Class of 1960, he joined the US Navy. He served on a submarine tender for 4 years active duty and then 2 years in reserves.
His career began in 1964 with Pacific Bell Telephone Company and A T & T where he was employed as an engineer and installation supervisor for 33 years. He led or supported expansion and upgrades of telephone switch gear throughout Northern California.
As an adult his passion for sports continued. He participated in organized leagues and competition in volleyball, golf, and tennis. He excelled in bowling with his name posted at Prosperity Lanes for his high scores! Family vacation camping trips were also exciting with plenty of time spent fishing on various lakes throughout California and wild motorcycle rides exploring the natural surrounding countryside. Wayne was an avid fan of the Sacramento Kings basketball team and had season tickets for several years. He was also an ardent follower of all the national football and basketball teams. In 2013, Wayne became a member of SIRS Sons in Retirement, Branch #124.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years Edie, daughter Angela (Matthew) D’Valentine, son Brian (Donna); grandchildren Tyler, Braden & Rory Cartwright and Jessica (Ryan) Scott, Dominic “Nico” and Damien D’Valentine as well as nieces, nephews and sisters-in-law.
He is preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Nellie Cartwright; brothers Arlen, Eugene and his wife Arlene, and Larry Cartwright.
