The family of Susan McFarlane (Avery) is saddened to announce her sudden passing on Monday, May 27th, 2024 at the age of 70 years.

She will be lovingly remembered by her husband with whom she spent 44 years, James “Jim” McFarlane of Grass Valley, CA; sister-in-law, Cathy Avery, of Port Townsend, WA; nieces, Natascha Avery of Port Townsend, WA; Janet McClure of Rocklin, CA; nephew, Scott Avery; great niece and nephews; Callie (David) Taylor, Caleob Mosier, Kyle Check, and Poppie Avery, great great nephew and niece Haden and Harper Taylor all of Port Townsend, WA; as well as numerous cousins; her close friends and her BINGO family!

Susan is preceded in death by her father and mother Lyn and Evelyn Avery and her three brothers, Steve, Jeff and Brad Avery.

Susan (fondly called Suey by her Great Greats) lived in Grass Valley, CA. She spent her life in service of others. She was the owner of the Little Red Hen restaurant in Colfax, CA, and worked for many years at what was known as the Highland House and Rosie’s Restaurant.

She graduated from Colfax High School. Susan will be remembered as kind, generous, caring, supportive, fun, and having an outstanding sense of humor.

Susan was well traveled and loved to explore new places, and old. She had a passion for reading, crafting and enjoying good food (especially sweet treats)! She passed on her passion for rock hounding and crystal collecting to all her Great and Great Greats. She was a remarkable woman who was very present and active in the lives of her loved ones, always willing to share her love unconditionally.

A private service will be held with immediate family. We ask anyone who would like to honor her to do so by getting out and indulging in something new and fun, or something that you love!
