August 15, 1930 – November 1, 2024

David was born in Bloomington, Indiana, to Floyd and Madge Childs. David was the oldest of two brothers. The family moved to Oceanside in 1944. David attended Oceanside High School.

Soon after graduation, David married his high school sweetheart, Shirley Hamilton. David attended UCLA and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education. He was commissioned into the Navy on March 9, 1953. David served on the USS TOLEDO (CA-133) as a Signal Officer. One of David’s naval assignments was duty at the Naval Base at Pearl Harbor. As a result, they were able to spend a year and a half living in Hawaii.

After David’s discharge they returned to the Los Angeles area where they lived until 1967 when the family moved to San Jose. Together they nurtured and raised four children: Catherine, Donald, Stanley and Carol.

David worked for IBM for 35 years and retired in 1987. David and Shirley built a home in the Sierra Foothills in Penn Valley, CA. Both enjoyed playing golf.

David was a devoted Catholic Christian attending St. Patrick Church for 35 years. He was an active participant in church activities, especially Bible Study programs.

David and Shirley enjoyed traveling. They were fortunate to make trips to Europe visiting Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France, Belgium, and England. In the millennium year of 2000, David and Shirley made the trip of their dreams going on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

David is survived by his three children Donald, Stanley and Carol Viola, six grandchildren Gabriel Aguilar, Neetra Emard, Alec Childs, Joshua Viola, Jonathon Viola and Maria Applequist, nine great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild; brother William Childs, and nephew Billy Childs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Shirley, his brother Thomas, and daughter, Catherine.
