Rudi was an unconventional man from start to finish. Born in Prague, he spent his youth in Argentina and his adulthood in California. He earned a PhD in physiology from U.C. Berkeley and studied photography, which led to the production of several exquisite books concerning logging and pre-Columbian sculpture.
Then he found the Grand Canyon. Starting as a passenger with Grand Canyon Dories, Rudi went on to guide trips for over 20 years, during which time he designed and built his own boat and took part in a record speed run documented in the book The Emerald Mile. From the river came his dedicated study of knots and ropework, which he shared and taught widely. With a flexible, curious mind and skills in fiberglassing and welding, he created beautiful and practical objects, from car parts to bongos to eyeglass cases.
After his river career, Rudi volunteered at the Food Bank of Nevada County for almost 30 years and was still delivering meals just weeks before his death. He was a very generous man who provided educational opportunities to many and was always full of wisdom and kindness. He is hugely missed by his oldest brother (Rudi was the youngest of four), his wife, two sons from a previous marriage, four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins in Argentina, and countless friends from everywhere. From all of us, a final salute to Rudi: Buen viaje, querido amigo. El rio siempre nos unira.
A gathering will be held at a later date.
