Robert Purcell, a kind-hearted husband and father, passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on April 2, 2024, in Grass Valley, CA. He was an exceptional human being who made everyone around him feel special and valued. He never spoke ill of anyone and always bid farewell with the words, “Have fun!”. His life was purposeful, and his wisdom was delivered with humility. Although his departure saddens us, we know his impact on the lives he touched will never be forgotten. “Bob” will always be remembered as a compassionate and devoted person who lived his life with purpose.
Bob was born to Abraham and Blanche Purcell in Oakland, CA, on November 17, 1931. He is survived by his wife, Pat Swope; 4 children, Debbie (Gary) Richard, Bonnie (Mick) Barnes, Bob Purcell, Jody (Larry) Robertson; and five children by marriage: Melodie (Bill) Swope-Johnson, Tracy Swope, Billy Swope, Wendy Swope, Chris (Mannie) Swope, and 11 grandchildren.
At 12, during WWII, Bob served as a communication runner for California Civil Defense Teams. This service was the start of his dedication to his country.
Bob went on to graduate from SF State College. He joined the Navy while still in college. Wanting to fly, Bob was discharged from there to join the Air Force and was accepted to flight school. Vertigo doused that dream, and he transitioned to the intelligence field under the Dept of Defense, where he excelled as an officer for 26 years.
He was a member of the Nevada City United Methodist Church. He also enjoyed being a Grass Valley Men’s Choir member, singing in Christmas concerts and other events.
He was known for his gentle smile and humor-filled eyes. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
A graveside service is planned for May 3rd at 11:00 am. at Sierra Memorial Lawn, 459 Hollow Way, Nevada City CA 95959.
