Beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather Charles L. Black passed away peacefully in his home on May 13. He was 89 years old.

Charles was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Norma, who passed away in 2022.

A service will be held in his honor at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, July 21, 2024, at Sierra Presbyterian Church, 175 Ridge Road in Nevada City.

Charles was born to Noble and Annie Black of Clarksdale, MS. As an all-state offensive lineman for Clarksdale High, Charles earned a full football scholarship to Mississippi State University.

But Charles’ life path changed when he and a friend took a trip to California. There he met the love of his life, Norma, when he stopped into a small Baptist Church and found her singing in the choir. He gave Norma a ride home, and five months later they were married.

Charles gave up his scholarship back home to begin a new life in the Bay Area with Norma and their two sons, Charles Jr and Gregory. Charles and Norma worked full time while Charles earned his Bachelor’s Degree in finance from San Francisco State University. He soon began a successful career in accounting and business management. Daughter Noelle completed the family while they were living in Southern California. They also lived in Hollister, CA for many years before Charles and Norma retired in 2000 and moved to Grass Valley.

Charles and Norma shared a love of competitive bridge (Life Masters), travel, and the San Francisco Giants. Charles was active in the church and became a Deacon and a valued member of the financial and stewardship committees.

Charles is survived by Charles Jr, Gregory (Joann), Noelle (Doug); grandchildren Amanda (Bryan), Paul (Sujean), Grant and Matthew; and great grandchildren Roman, Skylar and Emily.

In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to be given to World Vision (888-511-6548), Sierra Presbyterian Church (530-265-3291) or Hospice of the Foothills (530-272-5739).

Thank you to Hooper and Weaver Mortuary for their services.
