May 17, 1952 – July 4, 2024

Lifelong Colfax resident Ed Marson, 72, passed away peacefully with his loving family by his side in Colfax on July. 4. Ed had courageously battled several health issues over the past few years before recently being diagnosed with Amyloidosis, a rare heart ailment.

Ed was born in Auburn, Ca. on May 17, 1952 to Robert O. and Rita Marson. As a youth, Ed developed into a stellar all-around athlete excelling in football, basketball and baseball. He was selected to several Auburn Babe Ruth All Star teams and in 1967, with his future father-in-law Kenny Barnes managing the team, he pitched and hit Colfax to its first Auburn Babe Ruth league championship.

In high school at Colfax High, Ed was heavily involved in school activities and continued as a three sport standout earning all-league and MVP honors in both basketball and baseball. He continued his baseball career pitching with the Grass Valley Greens where he helped lead the team to three Sierra Valley League titles.

Ed was also a two sport athlete in basketball and baseball at Sierra College where in 1971 he helped pitch the Wolverines to win the Golden Valley Conference South baseball championship.

A longtime businessman in Colfax, Ed operated the longtime family business -Marson’s of Colfax – a clothing store started by his grandfather Oswald Marson and continued by his father Robert O. Marson which was a mainstay in Colfax for over 80 years. Heavily involved in Colfax community events, Ed was also a lifetime member and past president of the Colfax Recreation Association which provided recreational opportunities for the youth of Colfax.

In 1977, Ed married Connie Barnes and the union produced two daughters Carissa and Stacey. Besides coaching his daughters in both youth softball and basketball, Ed also coached at Colfax High School where he was an assistant coach on the school’s 1977-78 boys basketball team which was the No. 1 ranked Div. III team in the state and also as a pitching coach on the 2018 and 2019 Falcon baseball teams which won two CIF Sac-Joaquin Section crowns.

Ed was also a two time inductee to the Colfax High School Hall of Fame. He was also a versatile longtime standout of the Colfax Fireballs who were inducted into the Colfax Labor Day Fastpitch Hall of Fame and the Nevada County Softball Association Hall of Fame.

Ed was preceded in death by his parents Robert O. and Rita Marson. He is survived by his wife of 46 years Connie, and daughters Carissa Marson (Dave) of Auburn, and Stacey Kaping (Cole), of Orangevale. Also surviving are his beloved grandchildren River, Haven and Lilly, a brother Bob Marson of Sparks, Nevada and his longtime support dog, Charlie.

A memorial for Ed is planned at the Colfax Ball Park on Saturday, Aug. 31 from 11a.m. to 5 p.m. Casual dress will be the attire of the day.
