Mary Ann Crabb, aged 73 years and six days, passed from the mortal world on September 28, 2024 due to complications from diabetes.
She was born at Miner’s Hospital in Nevada City on September 22, 1951 and grew up in Grass Valley, California. She attended Mount St. Mary’s Academy for all except her senior year, when she graduated from Nevada Union High School in 1969. She was a member of the FFA and raised chickens in her parent’s backyard. As an adult she worked locally as a Certified Nursing Assistant. She was also an accomplished seamstress and created many beautiful quilts and clothing.
She may be best remembered for her work with the Merry Widow Society and their yearly appearances at the Mardi Gras and Constitution Day parades. Under her leadership the Widows raised over $50,000 in scholarships for single parents.
On May 22, 2005 she married Robert Crabb at the Washington Hotel, fulfilling a relationship that began when they met in a field behind her parent’s home when they were five years old.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Theodore and Leone Niehaus and is survived by her husband Robert, son Elijah Schwartz, and brothers Jim and Richard.
There will be a memorial gathering for her at a future date to be announced.
